Claudine Margaret Castelo Barretto-Santiago (born July 20, 1979), popularly known as Claudine Barretto, is a multi-awarded film and television actress, and product endorser in the Philippines.

Television roles

In 1992, she was discovered by talent manager Douglas Quijano, when her older sister Gretchen Barretto brought her to the debut party of friend Ruffa Gutierrez at the Coconut Palace. That same year, she got her break on television when she was cast in ABS-CBN's youth-oriented musical variety show, Ang TV.

When Home Along Da Riles was launched with no other than the comedy king Dolphy top billing the sitcom, Claudine was cast as Dolphy's sweet and unassuming teenage daughter, Bing, for sitcom producers saw in her a potential Maria. After which, she again became part of another top-rated sitcom Oki Doki Doc, led by Aga Muhlach, where she played the sister of Agot Isidro, Toni.

Claudine also did a telemovie together with Aga Muhlach titled Kailan Mo Ako Mamahalin?.

She practiced her hosting skills through variety shows, ASAP and MTB.

By 1993, Claudine already has 12 fans club in Metro Manila. Members are high school students like her.

Claudine was first in the history of Philippine television to star in 3 consecutive soap operas. Mula Sa Puso, which brought her to stardom, starring as the rich heiress Via, opposite the late Rico Yan; next was the two-year running Saan Ka Man Naroroon, where her performance as triplets Rosario, Rosenda and Rosemarie earned her a nomination for Best Actress in the Asian TV Awards in Singapore.[1] And Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan where she played the strong-willed yet revengeful Angeline Montenegro (Angelina in the past and Angeline in the present) who is in constant battle against the villains in her life who rejoices to see her fall and continues to hinder her to be with her one, true love.

After three consecutive soap operas, Barretto became part of the ensemble cast of 2003's two-season weekly series Buttercup. In 2004, she returned to primetime via the first modern fantaserye as the mermaid who is in search of the answer to the curse that was given to her by the sea deity Victoria, Marina. 2005's Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin where she played the role of Nea Fontanilla. A fighter, who keeps her dignity intact, who is brimming with generosity and full of positive attitude. This was the first time that she was not directed by Wenn Deramas.

After getting married, Barretto was reunited with Deramas in 2007's Walang Kapalit, where she played the role of Melanie Borromeo, the young stepsister of Noel. She has always wanted an older brother to protect her, but ended up with Noel, who seems to harbor an inexplicable hate towards her. She tends to get hurt easily, but will also put a good fight when challenged. Her life changes forever when she unexpectedly falls in love with Noel.

After giving birth, she played the role originated by Susan Roces in the 20-episode sineserye Maligno in 2008. She was Angela Cortez, a well-known newscaster, who was chosen to give birth to a demon child and although she tries to escape it, destiny catches up with her who then realizes that her son is doomed to become a satanic cult's chosen one.. This was followed by Iisa Pa Lamang, a love story that showed us the real meaning of love. She played Catherine Ramirez, an oppressed provincial girl who lost her one true love in the hands of a scheming woman. Heart-broken, homeless and rejected, Catherine strived to build a new life. Soon, blessings and opportunities come for Catherine; she then becomes a complex woman with complex values and intentions. But Catherine realizes that in order to break free from the past, she must find it in her heart to forget and forgive... before she can truly attain the happiness and true love that eluded her all these years.

Her last appearance on ABS-CBN was a special guest role in 2009's May Bukas Pa.

Upon her move to GMA 7, she was signed to star in a drama anthology entitled Claudine, which premiered on April 10, 2010.

Aside from her sitcoms and teleseryes, Claudine also did some other shows such as Star Drama Theater, Wansapanataym, Flames, Buttercup, Komiks, Star Magic Presents and Your Song.

Film career

Claudine is not only reigning in television shows, but in movies as well. At a young age, she already starred with veteran actors Dolphy and Aga Muhlach, and actresses such as the Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos, Diamond Star Maricel Soriano, and Megastar Sharon Cuneta.

Claudine was Seiko's bet for stardom. Her first three films under Seiko were Kumusta Ka, Aking Mahal?, Taong Gubat and Pulis Patola. She was paired with the dashing and debonair newcomer Emil Benedicto. She also did Kung Sakali Man and God...Save the Babies under this film outfit. Although an exclusive Seiko contract star before, she was still allowed to accept two assignments with Star Cinema, Home Along da Riles da Movie and May Minamahal.

In 1994's Lagalag: The Eddie Fernandez Story, she was cast as Pops Fernandez. In 1996, she appeared in May Nagmamahal Sa'yo and Sharon Cuneta in Madrasta.

Claudine starred in more than thirty movies. In 1998, she landed her first major lead role in Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita where she played the role of Mela, with a reputation of a bad girl in the campus and is going steady with Mr. Bad Boy. She then meets Mr. Perfect who does not care about her. Challenged, she pursued Mr. Perfect who eventually learned to love her despite her reputation. Claudine was very convincing in this role, a true versatile actress.

In 1999, she starred in the movie version of Mula Sa Puso, and in Soltera.

In 2000, she appeared in the film Anak. Claudine played a very challenging role as Carla, a daughter who ran loose and wild for lack of guidance. Claudine received a lot or praises from this movie and people started naming her as the next Vilma Santos.

In 2001, she played a nun in Oops! Teka Lang...Diskarte Ko 'To with Robin Padilla. This was her first action film.

In 2002, Barretto received her first Box Office Queen for Got 2 Believe Where she played the role of Toni, a wedding coordinator who believes in true love and is in search of finding Mr. Right. In this movie, Claudine showed that she could not only play dramatic roles but comedic roles as well. and Kailangan Kita[2] where she played Lena, a daughter who forgoes her personal happiness to keep her family from falling apart.

For 2004's Milan where she played the role of Jenny (an imposing figure in the Filipino community of migrant workers, whose dreams of grandeur have clouded her need for personal relationships), Barretto received the Ms. RP Movies recognition and Best Actress awards from FAP and FAMAS [3] beating the likes of Maricel Soriano, Nora Aunor and Judy Ann Santos. Claudine attended the red carpet screening and was overjoyed by the appreciation shown by the people all over the world. In addition, Milan (with the films Dekada '70 and Panaghoy Sa Suba) was also exhibited in the New Cinema of the World section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Barretto garnered three more Best Actress awards from PASADO, FAMAS, and PMPC for 2005's Nasaan Ka Man. In this movie, we can see a very different Claudine. Pilar was difficult to portray because according to Claudine it was something new. She never played a role like it before and was at first, scared on whether she can act the role right or not.

She received a Maria Clara Best Actress trophy for her performance in Dubai.[4] In 2007, Barretto received her second Box Office Queen crown (shared with co-star Kris Aquino) for the filmSukob where she played the role of Diana, who, together with her sister Sandy is in search of the answer to the uncanny and terrible events that happened in their lives. This movie became the highest-grossing Philippines-produced movie, a rank which it held until 2009.

Other movies include Sige, Ihataw Mo, Eat All You Can, May Minamahal, Muntik na Kitang Minahal, Mangarap Ka, Pare Ko, Radio Romance, Oki Dok Doc (The Movie), Home Along da Riles 2, Calvento Files (The Movie), and Flames the Movie.

On October 8, 2009, Barretto signed a two-picture contract with Viva Films.[5]

Transfer to GMA Network

After 17 years with Star Magic, Barretto signed a 2-year exclusive contract with GMA-7 on November 25, 2009.[6][7][8][9][10] In 2010, she starred in her own drama anthology, Claudine, then had a movie, In Your Eyes, under Viva Films and GMA Films. She also had a main role in Jillian: Namamasko Po. Now, she stars in Spooky Nights Presents: Nuno sa Feng Shui and she will star in an upcoming daily drama-telefantasya Iglot, making her big primetime comeback.
