Oedipodium griffithianum là loài rêu duy nhất trong họ Oedipodiaceae và lớp của nó. Loài này được (Dicks.) Schwägr. mô tả khoa học đầu tiên năm 1823.[5] Oedipodium griffithianum phân bố ở các vùng khí hậu lạnh hơn của lục địa Á-Âu, cũng như Alaska, Washington, British Columbia, Yukon, Greenland, Newfoundland, Tierra del Fuego và quần đảo Falkland.[6]
